4.0 Octave Concert Xylophone $4500

Walnut Frame - the frame wood was harvested in Michigan from black walnut trees

Aluminum Resonators - increased volume, individually tuned resonator stoppers

Select Honduran Rosewood Bars - only quarter-sawn boards of rosewood were used to make this xylophone

This xylophone, serial number 122, was designed and built for Blinn College in Brenham, Texas. This is the third of four matching marimbas. The others include a 6.3 octave concert marimba, a 5.0 octave practice marimba, and a 4.3 octave concert marimba.

This xylophone was built with quarter-sawn Honduran Rosewood. Quarter-sawn boards are more difficult to find, but the quarter-sawn cut makes the bars last longer under use of harder mallets. The bars are also graduated form 2 ½ inches wide on the low C to 1 5/8 inches on the high C. Each bar is a little wider than the one below it. This makes a seamless transition from register to register. The larger bars benefit greatly from the added width with increased volume.
